Because of the sheer size of Brazil, each of the 27 states run their own championships at the beginning of the year (from January to April).

The state champions and, in some states, the runners-up, are automatically qualified to play in the following year's Copa do Brasil.

Brazil State Championships

Campeonato Acreano:
The Brazilian state of Acre's football league has been played since 1947, when it was won by Rio Branco.

Campeonato Alagoano:
(Federação Alagoana de Futebol)
The Brazilian state of Alagoas' football league has been played since 1927, when it was won by Clube de Regatas Brasil (CRB) of Maceió.

Campeonato Amapaense:
The Brazilian state of Amapá's football league has been played since 1944, when it was won by Esporte Clube Macapá.

Campeonato Amazonense:
The Brazilian state of Amazonas' football league has been played since 1914, when it was won by Manaus Athletic.

Campeonato Baiano:

The Brazilian state of Bahia's football league has been played since 1905, when it was won by Clube Internacional de Cricket of Salvador.

Campeonato Brasiliense:

The Brazilian state of Distrito Federal's football league has been played since 1959, when it was won by Brasiliense (N.Bandeirante).

(Federação de Futebol do Estado do Espírito Santo)
The Brazilian state of Espírito Santo's football league has been played since 1917, when it was won by América of Vila Velha.

Campeonato Carioca:
(Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro)
Also known as as the Campeonato Estadual do Rio de Janeiro, this is the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro's football league. The first season of the Campeonato Carioca was played in 1906 (won by Fluminense); making it the third oldest league in Brazil; with only the Campeonato Paulista of São Paulo and the Campeonato Baiano of Bahia predating it.

The Brazilian state of Santa Catarina's football league has been played since 1924, when it was won by Avaí of Florianópolis.

The Brazilian state of Ceará's football league has been played since 1920, when it was won by Fortaleza Esporte Clube.

Campeonato Gaúcho:
(Federação Gaúcha de Futebol)
The Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul's football league has been played since 1919, when it was won by Grêmio Esportivo Brasil (also known as Brasil de Pelotas). Not to be confused with Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense.

The Brazilian state of Goiás' football league has been played since 1944, when it was won by Atlético Clube Goianiense.

Campeonato Maranhense:
(Federação Maranhese de Futebol)
The Brazilian state of Maranhão's football league has been played since 1918, when it was won by Fênix of São Luís.

(Federação Matogrossense de Futebol)
The Brazilian state of Mato Grosso's football league has been played since 1943, when it was won by Mixto Esporte Clube of Cuiabá.

The Brazilian state of Minas Gerais's football league has been played since 1915, when it was won by Clube Atlético Mineiro of from Belo Horizonte.

Campeonato Paraense:

The Brazilian state of Pará's football league has been played since 1908, when it was won by União Esportiva of Belém.

The Brazilian state of Paraíba's football league has been played since 1919, when it was won by Palmeiras of João Pessoa.

The Brazilian state of Paraná's football league has been played since 1915, when it was won by Internacional de Curitiba.

The Brazilian state of São Paulo's football league has been played since 1902, when it was won by the São Paulo Athletic Club (the football divison of SPAC was eventually closed). Intense rivalries between São Paulo (SPFC), Corinthians, Santos and Palmeiras has stamped its history on The Paulistão; the oldest estabilished league in Brazil.

The Brazilian state of Pernambuco's football league has been played since 1915, when it was won by Flamengo of Recife.

Campeonato Piauiense:

The Brazilian state of Piauí's football league has been played since 1941, when it was won by Botafogo of Teresina.

Campeonato Potiguar:
(Federação Norte-rio-grandense de Futebol)
The Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte's football league has been played since 1919, when it was won by América de Natal.

Campeonato Rondoniense:
(Federação de Futebol do Estado de Rondônia)
The Brazilian state of Rondônia's football league has been played since 1945 (amateur) and 1991 (professional). The first (amateur) team to win the league was Ypiranga of Porto Velho. Ji-Paraná, who won the first professional title in 1991, were only founded on April 22nd of that year. They haven't done so well in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C or Copa do Brasil though

Campeonato Roraimense:
Although the Brazilian state of Roraima's football league existed in 1974, it has only been played professionally since 1995; when it was won by Atlético Roraima of Boa Vista.

The Brazilian state of Sergipe's football league has been played since 1918, when it was won by Continguiba of Aracaju.

Campeonato Sul-Matogrossense:
(Federação de Futebol de Mato Grosso do Sul)
The Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul's football league has been played since 1979, when it was won by Operário Futebol Clube of Campo Grande.

Campeonato Tocantinense:

The Brazilian state of Tocantins' football league has been played since 1993, when it was won by Tocantinópolis.
