Confederaçao Brasileira de
Futebol: (CBF)
Founded in 1914, Brazil have been affiliated with FIFA since 1923.
Brazil have made 19 World Cup Finals appearances
1930, 1934, 1938, 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010.
Brazil have won the World Cup five times
Sweden 1958,
Chile 1962, Mexico 1970, West Germany 1974, Korea-Japan 2002.
Because of the sheer size of Brazil, each of the 27 states run
their own championships at the beginning of the year (from January to April).
The state champions and, in some states, the runners-up, are
automatically qualified to play in the following year's Copa do Brasil.
The Campeonato Brasileiro was founded in 1971 and has had many
rule changes along the way; sometimes during a season.
For the 2006 season, the number of contestants in Serie A was reduced
to 20, and CBF claimed it to be the definitive format.
While São Paulo have dominated the titles won by a state, Flamengo
have been the most successful by club; followed by Corinthians, Palmeiras and Vasco da
Gama.
