Group B

Travel to Chile Chile vs Travel to Australia Australia in Cuiaba.

Match Preview

Australia and Chile met in Berlin, during West Germany 1974; with neither team managing to score a goal in their group game.

Chile have beaten Australia in three international friendlies - 2:1 in Valparaiso (09/02/2000); 1:0 in Melbourne (07/02/1998); and 3:0 in Antofagasta (24/04/1996).

The Match

Within fifteen minutes, Chile were two goals up against Australia; as the South Americans tried to emulate Holland's goal spree against the current World Cup holders, Spain.

Goalscorers 1:0
Alexis Sanchez put Chile ahead in the twelfth minute after Australia failed to clear a poor header from Eduardo Vargas. Sanchez made no mistake from close range.

Goalscorers 2:0
Within two minutes Chile doubled their lead through Jorge Valdivia. While Sanchez and Vargas opened up the Australian defence with their fast movement, Valdivia was on hand at the edge of the box to fire the ball into the roof of Matthew Ryan's net.

Goalscorers 2:1
Australia needed to settle things down then ten minutes before the break, Tim Cahill headed them back into the game.

Half-time: Chile 2 - Australia 1

Cahill headed past Bravo again, after the restart, but Chile were saved by a raised flag for offside.

Goalscorers 3:1
With victory assured, Wigan's Jean Beausejour added to Chile's goal difference in injury time.
