Rio de Janeiro

When Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos sailed into what is now called Guanabara Bay, on New Year's Day in 1502, he thought it was the mouth of a river; hence the given name of Rio de Janeiro (January River).

Rio de Janeiro itself was founded by Estacio de Sa - on 1st March, 1565 - and became the political capital of Brazil from 1764 to 1960; when it was replaced by purpose-built Brasilia.

Football in Rio

Football is almost like a religion to the cariocas of Rio de Janeiro; on a par with Samba. Jairzinho, Zico, Romario and Ronaldo are some of the famous names to have learnt their skills on the sandy beaches.

Four of Brazil's most popular football clubs are based in Rio: Botafogo, Fluminense, Vasco da Gama and Flamengo.

Estadio do Maracana

The Maracana is undoubtedly one of the most famous football stadiums in the world and is Rio’s second most popular tourist attraction.

Even Wembley, in its heyday, could never hold 200,000 fans.

Rio de Janeiro Tourism

Rio de Janeiro may not be the capital of Brazil but it is the home of Samba and Brazil's most popular tourist destination.

The highlights of Rio's events calendar include New Year's Eve on Copacabana Beach and Carnival in the Sambodromo.

While most visitors to Rio de Janeiro will want to see the iconic sights of Sugarloaf Mountain - to the left of Copacabana - and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, on top of Corcovado Mountain, getting to know Rio means meeting the locals.

As most of the tourists head to Copacabana and Ipanema, try Catete - the area around Flamengo Beach - and Lapa, for a real Carioca experience.
