USA vs Portugal
The last time they met, USA beat Portugal (3:2) in Suwon, during Korea-Japan 2002.
The two teams have also played four friendly matches; USA winning by a
solitary goal in Chicago (03/06/1992) and Portugal doing likewise in Porto (19/12/1990)
and Setubal (20/09/1978).
The Lisbon encounter (07/10/1980) ended in a 1:1 draw.
Trailing USA by a goal, after taking the lead early in the game,
Portugal were facing elimination until substitute Silvestre Varela headed in the
equaliser; in the last seconds of injury time.
Nani sparked Portugal's World Cup dreams back into life when he took full advantage of
Geoff Cameron's poor clearance in the fifth minute.
Half-time: USA 0 - Portugal 1
It took almost an hour for Jurgen Klinsmann's Team USA to draw level in Manaus, through a
long-range strike from Jermaine Jones.
Clint Dempsey may be forgiven for thinking that he'd taken USA through to the Second
Round, with less than ten minutes left on the clock; even if the ball appeared to go in
off his belly.
Some may say that Cristiano Ronaldo has had a quiet World Cup but it was his cross as the
final injury-time seconds ticked down that allowed substitute Silvestre Varela to fly
towards the ball with his head.
The point was enough to keep Portugal in the tournament.
