Although the people of Hamburg still refer to it affectionately as
the Volksparkstadium, the name AOL
Arena was indirectly paid for with the people's money. Franz Beckenbauer refers to it
as 'one of the nicest stadiums in Europe'.
With a 55,000 capacity for domestic games the AOL Arena will hold a
little around 45,500 (all-seating) for World Cup matches.
Hamburg is Germany's second largest city and will be the World Cup
base for the US team and many of their American supporters.
The Hanseatic City's beautiful location on the Alster and Elbe rivers
give it a very maritime feel. The dense network of waterways and open water help shape the
city's appearance and it is said that Hamburg even has more bridges than Venice.
