Group D

Mexico vs Iran in Nürnberg:
Oswaldo Sanchez returned from his father's funeral to help Mexico put three points on the board.

Mexico vs Angola in Hannover:
In the opening minute, Mexico's Carlos Salcido lofted the ball onto the Angolan net and that was very much a sign of things to come as they failed to score in ninety minutes.

Portugal vs Mexico in Gelsenkirchen:
Just when the game seemed to have lost its urgency, Luis Miguel gave away a penalty with a lunging tackle and handball. Omar Bravo missed the 57th minute spot-kick and would have to settle for second place.

Knockout Stage

Second Round
Argentina vs Mexico in Leipzig.
Mexico surprised everyone by scoring first and taking the game to Argentina. The game eventually went to extra-time and Mexico lost out to a super goal.
