World Cup 2006 -- European Qualification

On Saturday, 3rd September 2005 Ukraine became the first team from Europe to join Germany. This will be Ukraine's first appearance in the World Cup Finals.

UEFA:
Union of European Football Associations.

Germany -- Qualify as hosts.
The remaining 50 European nations were divided into eight groups.

The winners of each group automatically qualify for the finals, along with the top two runners-up with the best records against the top six teams in their group.

The remaining six runners-up face a two-legged play-off to qualify.

Group 1:
Czech Republic, Holland, Romania, Finland, FYR Macedonia, Armenia and Andorra.

Wednesday, 7th September 2005:
Czech Republic vs Armenia (4-1)
Finland vs FYR Macedonia (5-1)
Holland vs Andorra (4-0)

Saturday, 8th October 2005:
Czech Republic vs Holland (0-2)
Finland vs Romania (0-1)

Holland qualify for the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany. The win against Czech Republic means both Poland and England qualify (even though the group 6 winner is not yet decided).

Wednesday, 12th October 2005:
Andorra vs Armenia (0-3)
Finland vs Czech Republic (0-3)
Holland vs FYR Macedonia (0-0)

Czech Republic make it through to the play-offs.

Group 2: (Ukraine qualified)
Turkey, Denmark, Greece, Ukraine, Georgia, Albania and Kazakhstan.

On Saturday, 3rd September 2005 Ukraine became the first team from Europe to join Germany. This will be Ukraine's first appearance in the World Cup Finals.

Albania vs Turkey (0-1)
Greece vs Georgia (1-0)
Kazakhstan vs Denmark (1-2)

Turkey make it through to the play-offs.

Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.

Liechtenstein vs Luxembourg (3-0)
Russia vs Portugal (0-0)

Saturday, 8th October 2005:
Portugal vs Liechtenstein (2-1)
Russia vs Luxembourg (5-1)
Slovakia vs Estonia (1-0)

Liechtenstein took a surprise lead in Portugal but the hosts equalised early in the second-half and went on to book their 2006 World Cup Finals ticket with a 2-1 victory against one of Europe's minnows.

Portugal vs Latvia (3-0)
Slovakia vs Russia (0-0)

Slovakia make it through to the play-offs.

Group 4:
France, Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, Israel, Cyprus and
Faroe Islands.

Cyprus vs Switzerland (1-3)
Faroe Islands vs Israel (0-2)
Republic of Ireland vs France (0-1)

Saturday, 8th October 2005:
Cyprus vs Republic of Ireland (0-1)
Israel vs Faroe Islands (2-1)
Switzerland vs France (1-1)

Wednesday, 12th October 2005:
France vs Cyprus (4-0)
Republic of Ireland vs Switzerland (0-0)

France eventually qualify for the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany.

Switzerland make it through to the play-offs.

Italy, Slovenia, Scotland, Norway, Belarus and Moldova.
